Outdoors in Rancho Cucamonga

The city sits against the San Gabriels, and the good news is the mountains do most of the work: Etiwanda Falls is a real waterfall forty minutes’ walk from a suburban trailhead, Icehouse Canyon puts you at 7,600 feet before lunch, and the Pacific Electric Trail gives you twenty flat miles on the old Red Car line for free.

The honest part, because this is where other guides fail you: the falls are seasonal — strong December through April, often a trickle by August. The Etiwanda preserve bans dogs and tows cars at sunset. Fire and wind closures happen with little notice in fall. We put the caveats on every listing, dated, so you can trust a Saturday to them.

One more thing we won’t do: send you to Cucamonga Canyon. Its legal status is unresolved and the fines were real. There are better hikes below that don’t risk a citation.
