Twenty flat miles of rail-trail on the old Red Car line — the best free activity in the city.

A century ago the Pacific Electric Red Cars ran through here; today their right-of-way is a 20-mile paved trail from Claremont to Rialto, and about six of those miles cross Rancho Cucamonga. It is flat, free, permit-free, and open every day — which makes it the best default outdoor plan the city has.

Cyclists get an uninterrupted east-west spine with street crossings signaled most of the way. Runners and walkers get a parallel crushed-stone path for most of the RC stretch, and equestrians still use it in the stretches near Alta Loma — this was ranch country and parts of it remember. Mountain views ride along the whole way when the air is clear.

Start at the Kenyon Way trailhead parking if you're driving to it. Ride west and you can be in Claremont Village for coffee in under an hour; ride east and it's quiet suburbia and open sky. No fees, no gates, no excuses.
