Sam & Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts & Crafts

The hand-built home and workshop of America's most celebrated woodworker, open for docent tours.

Sam Maloof built furniture that sits in the Smithsonian and the White House, and he built the house too — a hand-joined, lovingly odd compound in Alta Loma that he kept expanding for decades. Touring it is the closest thing to meeting the man: rocking chairs you'll want to touch (ask first), jigs still hanging in the workshop, and the garden Alfreda tended running wild with native plants.

This is the strongest arts destination in the city and one of the best house museums in Southern California, and it stays humble about it. Docent-led tours run Fridays and Saturdays 10am–4pm and often sell out — reserve ahead. First Sundays add free family 'Wonder, Wander & Make' events, and starting September 6, 2026 the Foundation opens every Sunday afternoon.

If you care about craft at all, don't leave town without seeing it.
